QUETTA: The National Party has remained divided during the presidential elections.

The central president and four members of the provincial assembly supported the government-backed presidential candidate, Asif Ali Zardari, while the party’s two senators voted for the Sunni Ittehad Council and the opposition-backed presidential candidate, Mahmood Khan Achakzai.

On Saturday, polling took place across all four provinces, the National Assembly, and the Senate for the presidential elections.

Former Chief Minister of Balochistan and Member of the Balochistan Assembly, Dr. Abdul Malik Baloch, along with provincial assembly members Rahmat Saleh Baloch, Khair Jan Baloch, and Kulsoom Niaz, voted for the government-backed presidential candidate, Asif Ali Zardari.

Whereas, on the other hand, Senator Tahir Bizenjo and Senator Akram Dashti cast their votes in favor of Mahmood Khan Achakzai in the Senate.

Sunni Ittehad Council and opposition-backed presidential candidate, Mahmood Khan Achakzai, speaking to the media after the presidential elections, expressed surprise that the National Party’s leader, Dr. Malik Baloch, was with them until last night. Adding that “I don’t know why he changed his mind but his two senators, Tahir Bizenjo and Akram Dashti, have voted for him.”

Regarding this, Senator Akram Dashti confirmed to the media that they had already decided to vote for the opposition’s candidate in the presidential elections.

Additionally, National Party’s member of the National Assembly, Phullian Baloch, while speaking to the media, said that under the decision of the party president, he has voted for the presidential candidate Asif Ali Zardari.
