QUETTA: The repair work on Phase 1 of the Kachhi Canal, which was severely damaged by the 2022 floods, is expected to be completed by November 15, according to officials from the Irrigation Department.

Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti chaired a review meeting on Tuesday at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat to assess the ongoing repair efforts and the construction progress of Phase 2 of the Kachhi Canal.

During the meeting, officials provided a comprehensive briefing on the project. They confirmed that repairs on Phase 1, heavily impacted by the floods, are proceeding as planned. Once completed, the canal will resume supplying water to agricultural areas in Balochistan, significantly improving the province’s water management system.

The officials also shared that the feasibility report for Phase 2 has been finalized. Construction on this phase will commence once funding is approved and released by the relevant authorities.

Chief Minister Bugti stressed the importance of completing the project without further delays, citing its vital role in Balochistan’s agricultural economy. He noted that the disruption in water supply caused by the canal’s damage has had severe consequences for the region’s farmers over the past two years.

He expressed concern over the economic hardships faced by farmers who have been unable to grow crops due to the water shortage. Bugti pointed out that many residents in Dera Bugti and surrounding areas have been forced to migrate due to the lack of agricultural water.

Reaffirming the government’s commitment to the project, Bugti stated that the completion of the canal will help reclaim barren land and provide critical support to landowners and farmers. He directed that all repair and construction work be carried out on schedule, adhering to high standards, with proper technical planning to prevent water leakage and wastage.

The Chief Minister also instructed the Chief Secretary of Balochistan to personally oversee the project’s progress, ensuring it is completed on time. He emphasized that the Kachhi Canal is a crucial initiative that will enhance irrigated agriculture, reduce poverty, and combat extremism in Balochistan’s remote and underdeveloped regions.
