The United Nations mission has offers Balochistan government to providing its full support to control drought and public relief in Balochistan.

Recently a UN delegation mission headed by Mr. Markus Werna meets Chief Minister Balochistan Jam Kamal Khan Alyani and assured to support combating against drought in Balochistan.

During the meeting the UN delegation has assured to provide full assistance for malnourished women and children in drought affected Districts and announced to start a nourishment program.

Despite that the drought had devastated major parts of Balochistan. The Government at all levels is unmoved and yet to accept that drought had played havoc with the people and resources, mainly water resources of Balochistan.

The drought would be more devastating for Quetta and its surrounding where the water level had gone down during the past two years and in absence of significant rains to recharge or keep water to sustainable level.

Drought-like situation in province has reportedly affected over half of million people and had a severe impact on the agriculture and livestock sectors in the province.

At the Federal Government level, the rulers are happy in playing politics or showing their interests in the projects ensuring to earn big returns to the decision-makers and they were found least bothered about the impact and intensity of drought prevailing in Balochistan for past several years.

It was observed that in past Federal Government denied international help and assistance for the people of Balochistan whenever there is any natural disaster hit this part of Pakistan. The people, in general, condemned this inhuman attitude of the rulers and the affected people of Balochistan, mainly those affected by massive earthquakes, torrential rains and flood or drought.

Largest province of Pakistan witnessed more than 11 major natural disasters during the past two decades and in all cases the international community was barred from participating in the relief work for providing some comforts to the affected people.

On the Contrary, spell of torrential rains and snowfall lashed major parts of Balochistan inundating low lying areas in the major cities.

In case of torrential rains and massive snowfall is expected to raise the water level substantially improving water supply to the rain-fed region where tube-wells are used massively to irrigate land or saving orchards from prolonged drought. But it’s unfortunate that there is no system of water storage and the planners in Pakistan failed to develop water storage facilities or build dams for the past 70 years, barring the two dams one on Hub River to augment the water needs of Karachi instead of a Balochistan specific project and the Mirani Dam which was built on the order of former Army Chief General ® Pervez Musharraf.

The Balochistan Government should construct more dams to ensuring drinking water supply for the people of Balochistan. The Incumbent government must pay serious attention as drought is a great threat to the province.

This serious issue must be addressed right now. The water scarcity will continue across the year and could cause a more serious crisis. The situation is worrying one and requires a coordinated response.

The Provincial Government should make an appeal to the international Community and the United Nations for help and relief during drought in Balochistan.

This time, the people of Balochistan should not be discriminated and denied international help, mainly from the developed countries of the world as in case of Azad Kashmir where earthquake badly hit and the whole world was allowed to provide relief even 10 years after the earthquake.
