QUETTA: Chief Justice Balochistan High Court Justice Tahira Safdar was sworn in as 18th Chief Justice of Balochistan High Court, becoming first female CJ in any high court of the country to take charge as Chief Justice.

Governor Balochistan Muhammad Khan Achakzai administrated oath to Chief Justice BHC Justice Tahira Safdar after she replaced Justice Noor Meskanzai who retired on Friday serving as Chief Justice of Balochistan High Court for last four years.

The oath taking ceremony of Chief Justice Balochistan High Court Justice Tahira Safdar was held in Governor House Quetta where honorable Judges of Balochistan High Court, Chief Minister Balochistan Jam Kamal Khan, Lawyers, and Government officials were presented.

Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Saqib Nisar in July approved the appointment of Justice Tahira Safdar as Chief Justice of Balochistan High Court as she was the most senior judge in BHC after retired Justice Noor Meskanzai.

Born in October 1957 Chief Justice Balochistan High Court Justice Tahira Safdar is the daughter or distinguish lawyer Syed Imtiaz Hussain Baqri Hanafi, she has the honor of becoming province’s first female civil judge while she took oath as permanent Judge in September 2011.

She completed her initial studies from Cantonment Public School Quetta and went to obtain her bachelor’s degree from Government Degree Girls College Quetta.

After completing her Masters’ in Urdu Literature Justice Tahira Safdar successfully completed her law studies from Law College Quetta and she remained successful in passing her competitive exams held by Balochistan Public Service Commission. Subsequently, she was promoted to the rank of Senior Civil Judge back in 1987.

During her career as Justice in Balochistan High Court Chief Justice Tahir Safdar heard 157 Constitutional petitions filed in BHC. She is also a member of three members’ judge of a special court which is conducting the trial of former Dictator General Parvez Musharraf for committing treason by imposing emergency in Pakistan in November 2007.
