33,000 TB patients emerge annually in Balochistan

QUETTA: Head of the TB control program Balochistan Dr. Sami Kakar has said that, about 33,000 people are suffering from TB disease annually in Balochistan. “Screening of 700 prisoners of District Jail Quetta has started which will be completed in four days,” Dr. Sami said while talking to reporters at the inauguration of a camp for the screening of prisoners in the District Jail Quetta.

Earlier, IG Prisons Mohammad Yousuf Malik, Head of TB Control Program Balochistan Dr. Sami Kakar and Superintendent District Jail Quetta Saleem Tareen inaugurated a regular prisoner screening camp. Dr. Sami Kakar said that since 2018, 10166 patients have been diagnosed and started treatment. Prisoners have been screened in 5 prisons of province, where 14 TB patients have been identified and treatment has started.

“In next few months, Preventive therapy of 2000 prisoners and prison staff, measures will be taken to prevent the spread of disease,”Dr. Kakar said. He added that TB control program in District Jail Quetta has set up a camp for screening of prisoners in which more than 700 prisoners will be screened and screening of prisoners will be completed in 4 days. He said that treatment has been started after of 33,000 TB patients after being diagnosed in Balochistan.

He said that TB control program screened people through 14 different medical camps and mobile units in 14 districts of the province. After the diagnosis of TB in 10166 people, regular treatment has been started.
“We have screened prisoners in five prisons in Khuzdar, Nushki, Panjgur, Turbat, Gwadar, Nasserabad in Balochistan, of which 14 prisoners were diagnosed with TB and now District Jail Quetta prisoners are to be screened,” he said.
