Drought is a continuous period of dry weather, when an area gets less than its normal amount of rain, over months or even years. Droughts can become dangerous to people and other land animals; causing famine and even creating deserts.

Draught is such era’s of gasping climate, which when lengthy causes the moisture level to decrease and to be incapable for man’s use. Over the years, the breeze has caused tons of hectares around the world to go prize and powerless to be collected. The desertification is one of the many penalties of famine. The drought in the province has had indisputable impact on the economic situations of Balochistan. The people have been troubled, and they migrated due to drought, causing their agriculture and other businesses to be uninhibited.

The United Nations Convention included the following definition for drought-related “measure to mitigate the effects of drought is those activities that relate to the prediction of drought and are aimed at reducing the vulnerability of society and natural systems in the face of scarcity equally related with opposing desertification.

Climate change is the major factor behind the drought as it has put monsoon areas in the grips of drought and changing climate could also increase the number of natural disasters in the province and will bring disastrous destruction in Economy, Agriculture and livestock sectors.

Balochistan is continuously facing malnutrition challenges. The prevalence of underweight children is 39.6 percent, and muscle wasting prevalence is 16.1 percent. Children in the province are already coping with macro and micro nutrient deficiencies including and the vitamin D, iodine iron and which vitamin A being 73 %. Deficient in children of Balochistan.

The vicious cycle in which malnourished mother gives birth to a malnourished infant consequently becoming a malnourished mother is continuous in Balochistan for decades. About only 55% mother have a normal body mass index and nutritional status. The dilemma with a malnourished drought hit society is both with long term and short term consequences.

The malnourished child will either thrive to live or will die due to immune deficiency and weak physical coping status. If the child will survive the impact on the long-term basis, he will be physically and cognitively weak to face the challenges of life
The provincial economy entirely depends on agriculture products especially livestock and its byproducts.

Livestock mainly dependent on 93% of the rain lands present in the province as 90% of the feed requirements of livestock particularly of small ruminants are met from them. As matter of fact, livestock is proportional to the development of agriculture to a considerable extend. Hence both depend on rainfall as result they both face continual drought.

According to the 2000 census there were 329,872 farmers in the province of Balochistan. Only 65% of them have irrigated lands. Others were much more affected by the drought. The livestock sector of Balochistan was highly affected by the drought.

Reduced availability of feed resources due to persistent drought, the flock owners were forced to sell their stock at very low prices. A mature sheep and goat were available for fewer prices as compared to the pre-drought prices. Mortality due to hunger and disease infestation of malnourished animals has increased several times. Distress sale and mortality together have resulted in an overall reduction of 35% in stock size, with the individual owners in most severely affected areas losing 80-100% of their animals.

Over the years, Balochistan has been one of the areas most affected by the drought. The long drought of 1997-2002 left Baluchistan’s agriculture and livestock sector virtually paralyzed. Since then, the agriculture and social sector of the region has lived under continuous threat of severe drought and according to recent news people of Chaghi, Mekran and Kharan are badly affected from drought considering themselves helpless because government has not taken enough measures to cope with this issue as it was mentioned earlier by national and international institutions that the situation of drought will go worse in Balochistan if long term planning were not made.

Noticing the current situation of drought, poor health facilities, high mortality, weak and malnourished children, A resolution was moved by Sanaullah Baloch in Balochistan assembly’s session held on 5 November 2018 where he mentioned that Balochistan is facing Drought-like situation for a long and urged provincial and federal Government to declare it climate affected and relief package should be announced for people of Balochistan which was a smart move because Drought a natural hazard, may lead to serious disasters,

such as population displacement and death of humans and livestock in addition to the degradation of natural resources seriously deteriorated. Governments and regional and international bodies and organizations cannot afford this level of about dire consequences to waste any time when there is evidence of drought in the region in order to move the initiative to provide the necessary assistance.

The Government should be responsible to mobilize the people regarding necessary steps to save the water, agriculture and livestock development of the province. A comprehensive approach should be taken to involve all the stakeholders. A farsighted assumption is endangered future of Balochistan both socially and economically In many countries measures have been taken to forecast a drought. Such bodies are established on the local, provincial and national basis.

These bodies are entitled to such jobs as forecasting drought, pre-drought planning, acting during a drought and managing post-drought situation. The private sector should also be taken into consideration while devising and implementing drought related strategies locally and nationally. It is also essential that Government, with the cooperation of private sector should take necessary measures to preserve and enhance the development of livestock sector in the economy. Livestock sector of Balochistan is one of the key Economic components of the province.

Balochistan needs staunch planners and doers. We need to establish dams, reservoirs and rainwater storage systems throughout the province. Hard work and best planning is required to prevent Balochistan from drought, especially for the safeguard of the people of Balochistan.
