ABU DHABI: Pakistani skipper Sarfraz Ahmed, while speaking about the his side’s defeat in the first Test match against New Zealand, on Monday called out Pakistani batsmen for the lack of patience they demonstrated on the crease.

“I feel our batsmen should have spent more time which we failed to do and this led to mistakes,” Ahmed said.

Pakistan with two days remaining were unable to chase a meagre target of 176. They were bowled out for 171 with debutant left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel finishing with 5-59 and fast bowler Neil Wagner taking 2-27. Azhar Ali top-scored with 65 while Asad Shafiq scored 45 runs.

“We have to give credit to Ajaz who bowled brilliantly,” Ahmed said about the New Zealand spinner.

Former cricketer-turned-analyst Sikander Bakht called Pakistan’s batting “deplorable.”

“Our batsmen do not know how to handle the pressure. I blame the top order, including Babar, Hafeez, Sarfaz and Asad Shfiq. These are the top playes who need to be able to finish matches,” Bakht said.

“If there is one word to describe Pakistan’s batting performance against New Zealand it would be deplorable.”

Journalist and analyst Aalia Rasheed said the current lot of players needs to learn from role models such as Javed Miandad and Younis Khan in how to deal with pressure.

“They knew this was a pitch where big shots could not be played. They had two days and could have taken singles easily.”

Rasheed also said the players were more focused on the financial aspects they received from different leagues.
