Domestic violence in Pakistan is an endemic social problem. Domestic violence is a behavior with another person. It is full of disadvantages for men, women and children as well. Mostly the women are being the victim of domestic violence and are not safe, even from their own families. Women play a vital role for the development of a nation but we have totally ignored our women. They are the part our society, equal rights should be provided but their lives are at risk.
According to the Human Rights every year more than 5000 women are killed and between 70 and 90 percent are abused physically. The majority of the cases are disappeared without interrogations. The law enforcement authorities do not view domestic violence as a crime and usually refuse to register the cases and give justice to the women. Only few victims have been able to survive but almost had died or affected by a life time suffering.
In only Islamabad, nearly 4,000 women had been attacked during the period of eight years in which 30 percent women were pregnant. The Human Rights estimated about four women are killed in this manner every day.
Acid attacks in Pakistan came international when a documentary film saving Face was released by Sharmeen Obaid. The main reason of attack is, when women reject the proposal of the marriage. The first case of acid held in East Pakistan at 1967. Since then the attacks are increasing and each year 150 acid attacks are taking place.
Many factors are associated with domestic violence in Pakistan. The illiteracy, social taboos and poverty are the main reason of domestic violence against women in the country. Due to lack of awareness about women rights and not getting support from Government are main factors. Beside this, in some traditional societies, women are tortured physically. Women have been targeted several times, ranging from physical to psychological and sexual abuse from partner, in-laws and family members. As majority of the women were killed by either family members or in-laws.
Another factor is early marriages in Pakistan, which is a curse for girls. Early marriages happen in most of the south Asian countries but it is practiced more in Pakistan. After the marriage the women sacrifice their life for their husband as a slave. Women have a specific place and respect in society according to the Islamic values so they shouldn’t be beaten or abused.
A research carried out that Pakistan is ranked the third most dangerous country in the world for women, where it is hard for them to survive. During 2009, a domestic violence protection bill was passed. But it was not accepted because it was mentioned that it would increase the divorce.
A law was introduced in Sindh province for stoppage of domestic violence which made Pakistan one from the 90 countries of the world which contain law for domestic violence. The government should introduce this law in whole country somehow it will be helpful to safe women from physical torture, sexual abuse and acid attacks.
