QUETTA: A joint meeting of the central leadership of the Baloch Students Organization (BSO) and Baloch Students Organization Pajjar (BSO-P) was held in Quetta on Thursday.

In the meeting, the BSO was represented by Chairman Balach Qadir, Senior Vice Chairman Nazir Baloch, Secretary General Samand Baloch, Senior Joint Secretary Maqbool Baloch, and Secretary Information Shakoor Baloch. Meanwhile, BSO-Pajjar was represented by Chairman Bohir Saleh, Secretary General Abrar Barakat, and Junior Vice Chairman Dr. Tariq Baloch.

During the meeting, the leaders of both organizations discussed the current educational situation in Balochistan and the issues facing students. They highlighted that the institutions are suffering from academic and administrative crises. Instead of promoting quality research and creative work in educational institutions, they are being run as profit-making factories.

The student leaders criticized the arbitrary increases in fees in various universities, which they compared to closing the doors of education for the students. They mentioned that under the HEC and Balochistan Universities Act, any educational institution can increase fees by up to ten percent every year. However, in contrast, some institutions, including the University of Balochistan and Sardar Bahadur Khan Women’s University, have imposed arbitrary fee hikes, which are unacceptable for students.

Speaking at the joint meeting, they pointed out that students are being charged excessive fees for admissions in all colleges in Balochistan. Fees are collected for computer labs and transportation, but neither do the colleges have functional computer labs, nor are students provided with better transport facilities. Hundreds of ghost teachers have been appointed in Balochistan’s schools.

The meeting concluded with the decision to collectively struggle to address the academic issues, including fee increases in universities and colleges, in view of the student’s difficulties.
