ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan’s lawyer Babar Awan on Thursday told the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) that “donkey” is an ordinary term.

He made these remarks after he appeared before ECP after it summoned Khan over his use of foul language against rival candidates and parties during ongoing elections campaign.

Imran’s counsel told the ECP that his client is busy in the election campaign in Lahore hence he cannot appear today.

Awan then played Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Ayaz Sadiq’s video clip in which he was passing derogatory remarks against PTI chief. Upon this, ECP Punjab member, Altaf Ibrahim, remarked that more notice going to be issued.

Awan further said that use of word donkey is common as teachers use it for their students but ECP did not accept the explanation.

Further, on the insistence of ECP that such remarks not be used in the campaign, Awan submitted a written assurance on behalf of PTI chief vowing not to use such words again.

In a suo moto notice, ECP had ordered Imran Khan to appear before its four-member bench on Thursday. “The notice has been taken based on media reports,” the commission said on Wednesday.

On July 13, Imran Khan simulated those who would go to welcome the former prime minister Nawaz Sharif at Lahore airport to the ‘donkeys’.

“There is no difference between donkeys and the workers heading airport to welcome Nawaz”, said PTI “There is no difference between donkeys and the workers heading Airport to welcome Nawaz,” said PTI chairman while addressing to election gathering in Narowal.

“Nawaz looted 300 Billion of country’s wealth, whereas he and his daughter are returning in the way as they are triumphant”, he added.
