Chief Election Commissioner Justice (retd) Sardar Muhammad Raza on Tuesday called on Prime Minister Nasirul Mulk at the latter’s office.

The two discussed matters pertaining to the forthcoming general elections. The PM reiterated the caretaker government’s unflinching support for the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on holding on time, free and fair elections.

Second phase of elections commences

The second phase of the electoral process started across the country on Tuesday with nomination papers being scruitinised with the help of various institutions. According to the ECP, data of over 12,000 candidates was sent to National Accountability Bureau, Federal Board of Revenue and State Bank of Pakistan for scrutiny.  Over 7,500 nomination papers have been verified with the help of the Online Data Scrutiny System till date.

As per the election schedule, the scrutiny process will conclude on June 19. Appeals against rejection or acceptance of nomination papers can be filed by 22nd of this month. The Appellate Tribunals will decide the appeals by 27th, after which the revised list of candidates will be published on 28th of this month.

On June 1, the caretaker PM received Guard of Honour from the armed forces at the PM Office. “Mark my words, the general elections will be held on time,” Mulk said in a brief and informal conversation with journalists after assuming charge.

He said free and fair polls would be the top priority of the caretaker government. “We will perform our responsibilities with utmost diligence for which we are here.”
