LAHORE: Funeral prayer of noted human rights lawyer and social activist Asma Jahangir has offered outside Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Tuesday.

Large number of lawyers, judges including Lahore High Court (LHC) Chief Justice Yawar Ali Shah and citizens participated in the funeral led by Haider Farooq Maududi.

The lawyer will be laid to rest at her farm house on Bedian Road.

Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar, former premier Nawaz Sharif, Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Shehbaz Sharif, Senator Aitzaz Ahsan, Chief Election Commissioner Sardar Muhammad Raza Khan and others expressed condolences over her demise.




Asma Jahangir passed away at the age of 66 on Sunday due to cardiac arrest. She was the former president of Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA).

Asma Jahangir had won many national as well as international awards including Martin Ennals Award for Human Rights Defenders in 1995, Hilal-i-Imtiaz in 2010, and various others. She was co-founder of Human Rights Commission of Pakistan and also chaired it.

She was elected as SCBA president on October 27, 2010.

She was also an outspoken critic of the powerful military establishment, including during her stint as the first-ever female leader of Pakistan’s top bar association.

Jahangir was arrested in 2007 by the government of then-military ruler Pervez Musharraf and held under house arrest. In 2012 she claimed her life was in danger from the feared Inter Services Intelligence spy agency.
