During the past few days, Balochistan experienced changes on the political set up after a group of MPAs tabled a no confidence motion against the Chief Minister, Nawab Sanaullah Zehri. With the passage of time, the motion attracted greater attention and more support making it impossible for the Chief Minister to continue to remain in office. Consequently, he decided to step down and tendered his resignation which was instantly accepted.

Political observers appreciated the decision of Nawab Sanaullah Zehri to step down instead of involving in a dirty debate of allegations and counter allegation on the floor of the Assembly. He rightly stepped down and paved the way for the Assembly to elect a new leader. His step did not oppose the democratic traditions and accepted the change on the political plane. Some other observers of the political scene are of the view that the new Government had merely weeks and not months and years to rule. The Assembly is close to complete its constitutional tenure and there will be a caretaker Government for fresh elections.

Thus the new Government is wisely advised that it should not involve in long term planning and it should try to address the problems for the short term avoiding wasting time and energy. The Government should concentrate on the immediate and urgent problems of the people selecting a few pressing ones. It will be appreciated that the Government should devote its energy and resources in improving the law and order problem all over Balochistan ensuring the security of life and property on priority basis. If possible, then the Government should fight back rampant street crimes, take initiatives against the illegal immigrants and fight corrupt practices in all forms and manifestation.

The prime task should be cleaning the house on priority basis as vested interests are well entrenched in the CM Secretariat for the past decades and not years. They had become Mafia and involved in sabotaging the welfare plans of the past Government. Even senior most journalists had complained that they failed to break the cordon of the Mafia and denied meeting the Chief Executive for months and not days and weeks. All those elements that developed vested interests at the CM Secretariat should be dislodged immediately before they inflict any damage to the Government and tarnish its image in the first-ever available opportunity. The past two Chief Ministers suffered at their hands with tarnishing their image in the eyes of the people. Both Nawab Sanaullah Zehri and Nawab Mohammad Aslam Raisani suffered a lot with their image tarnished using negative propaganda campaign. Nawab Aslam Raisani publicly complained that his Media Managers were responsible for the bad image of his Government. Same is absolutely true in the case of Nawab Sanaullah Zehri who too had become a victim of political intrigues. Therefore, the new Chief Minister should perform house cleaning first and send all those officials who are in the CM Secretariat for decades and not years. All those officials should be sent back to their parent department with the first available opportunity so that working of the CM Secretariat should be smooth and orderly. However, it is the discretion of the Chief Minister to select his staff and we are no body to dictate him what to do and what not. The Ministers and MPAs should also be barred from selecting officials of their choice in their districts or home constituencies. It is worst form of corruption and against the main spirit of good governance to depute favourites in districts and on sensitive or lucrative postings. The Ministers should be asked not to interfere in the day-to-day administration and confined their suggestions to the official meetings of the Cabinet or on the floor of the Balochistan Assembly. Release of funds on all junk schemes of the PSDP should be stopped forthwith. Funds should be released for important development projects which ensure an increase in revenue of the State or providing job opportunities in a significant manner.
