QUETTA: Pak-Afghan border at Chaman remained closed for the fifth consecutive day as the 2nd meetings of Pakistani and Afghan officials ended without any result on Tuesday.

According to an official in Chaman, the Baba-e-Dosti (Friendship) Gate in Chaman remained closed on Tuesday and security was tightened around the border. It was the fifth day that either side of the border remained closed with no trade activities. There was long queue of vehicles in and around Chaman border which want to cross the border and enter to Afghanistan.

A large number of people gathered at the border gate, and waited for hours. They, however, returned with disappointment. A Flag Meeting between Pakistani and Afghan officials was held at the border, but there was no announcement of reopening of the Gate. “I think meeting was not fruitful today again. The border is remained closed for the fifth consecutive day,” Rehim Khan, a truck driver at Chaman border said.

Most of the people live either side of the border depend on the bilateral trade, and their business was badly affected due to the closure of the border. “Thousands of families’ livelihood is dependent on the border trade and activities,” said a resident of Chaman, a town shares border with Afghanistan.
